This is my first attempt at a robot type thing and i'm already stuck, I need suggestions on how to attach the legs to the body and make it look right.

Ball joint? no way!
Make the shoulder armor piece hang over its arm, and make the arm go into the armor, as if the plates are separated, would make up for a way more bulky robot, ball joints are for toys

But thats just my take though.. i never model robots

use either ball joints, or if you want more detail do it "gundam" type, you can get lots of ideas from that show, then just alter it to make it your own.
